Calbayog District Hospital The CALBAYOG DISTRICT HOSPITAL was created under law after a donation of a one hectare lot by the late Mayor Pedro Pido in the year 1949. A wooden hospital was built and finished in 1951. This was occupied by the Franciscan Missionaries until 1956 when an operational budget of Php 50,000.00 was passed by congress for a 25 bed hospital. Hiring of personnel started in the late part of the year and an out-patient service became functional. Full operation of hospital service begun in 1957.
In view of the consistent 100% bed occupancy rate an extension left wing was constructed. In 1959 budget was approved increasing the bed capacity to 50 beds. An extension right wing was constructed in the same year as well as a nurse home and residents quarter. R.A. 3135 converted the Calbayog Emergency Hospital into Calbayog City General Hospital on June 16, 1961. This was followed by another expansion into the right and left wing making the main hospital building u-shaped. The expansion accommodated more than 50 patients per day so that an increase in bed capacity was proposed in 1970. Presidential Decree 733 established the Calbayog General Hospital as a 75-bed hospital. Before the establishment of Gandara and Allen Emergency Hospitals most of the patients coming from these districts patronizes this hospital. For ten (10) years, the bed occupancy rate of the hospital consistent at 180% so that a proposal to construct a new concrete building was conceived. A plan was made to construct a Calbayog type 100-bed hospital which was started in 1978. Phase III which houses the patient’s rooms was completed in 1979. Phase I was constructed in 1982 which houses surgical patients rooms, the operating theater and obstetrical and delivery rooms. The dispensary and emergency was also constructed and finished in May 1983. A four (4) room dormitory was constructed in 1979. Phase II of the main hospital building was started in 1983 and was finished in May of 1986. A two (2) room dormitory was added to the previous construction and a kitchen and dining room was added to the building and was finished in December of 1986. Phase IV completion of construction started in 1989 and completed within the calendar year of 1990. The personnel compliment started in 1957 from 25 and had grown gradually to 86 personnel in 1984. With integration on the field health service to the hospital services, 34 other personnel was added to make a total of 120. An addition of 4 positions in the Field Health Services was created in 1988-1989 to make full complement of 124 personnel for the Calbayog District Hospital. Under the new name, Calbayog District Hospital (CDH), the hospital is relatively well-known to Eastern and Northern Samar. It was in the time of Dr. Erdulfo Jose R. Canto that the name General Hospital was changed to Calbayog District Hospital. It was also duting his administration on April 1993 when the national government implemented the Local Government Code as written by Senator Aquilino Pimentel, decentralizing the authority over to the local government.
